Our building and contents insurance is due at the end of August. We’ve stupidly been with the same company for nearly 10 years, each year it goes up and we absorb it. This year they’ve excelled themselves. The premium went up by £150.00!!!! Taking the total to over £700.00. Yep that’s right over £700.00
We live in a 1930’s mid terrace, three bedroom house, not the Whitehouse! We do have some nice things, but £700+. They’re taking the piss.
Anyway my husband looked about and got the same insurance cover for over £400 cheaper! So the moral of this story is don’t stay with the same company. Loyalty does not pay.
After we cancelled the new policy for over £700, which by the way was through Sainsburys, we received a letter from Sainsbury’s telling us that we overpaid on our 2022/2023 policy. No shit Sherlock, and they were going to refund the account we paid our premium from. This was all neatly broken down, which effectively means nothing. But I question that if we were charged over by nearly £60 for 2022/2023, were we also overcharged for 2023/2024? So we’re in the process of finding out. I questioned them and I will get answers. When I do I’ll let you know.
Looking at this, is it any wonder families can’t afford to have insurance on their property or cars. Its illegal not to have your car insured, but there are thousands out there who can’t afford insurance but still drive on the roads. If you are involved in an accident with an uninsured driver you are basically stuffed. There is nothing you can do, except privately prosecute the uninsured driver, but you’re not going to get anything, they’re broke.
Again, its the law abiding, tax paying citizen who pays through the nose and gets penalised and what do our governments do? Absolutely nothing. They’re not interested because the higher the costs the higher the VAT, which they rake in by the thousands.
If we all decided not to insure our property, cars, lives the insurance companies would have to re-evaluate their costs, but they know we won’t because the majority of us wouldn’t risk not having insurance.
Like society as a whole, the insurance companies are greedy and we are feeding their greed. Question your premiums, and definately look around for a cheaper deal, you will get it.
